27 years on and the bounty is raised. What would Mr Rushdie make of this news?

my wallet is ready, togo - where's the fund?
A fatwa is a ruling by an Islamic authority on any matter concerning Muslim life or interpretation of the faith, Mikey, and so could be viewed as a legal precedent.

Khameini and his predecessor are certainly bigots, but, unfortunately the suborning of murder for someone who insults the prophet is totally Islamic.

Death is the prescribed punishment for blasphemy in the Sharia (a total system of law aspects of which you've stated you are quite happy to see run in parallel with UK law).

Mohammed himself arranged the murders of several critics who satirised his claims in verse.
Ah, I see DTCwordfan has arrived. If you don't believe me ask him, Mikey: he's an expert on all things islamic.
just as expert as my bete noir is at verbal masturbation - ijiut.....
divebuddy you are soooo right on that. I thought it was wickepedia cut and paste's with a half asred plot you weren't supposed to notice. Just finished reading The Martian (in 2 sessions over one and a half days) cracking read. Watched the film this afternoon. Brilliant. Ridley Scott nailed it. I could have picked a better soundtrack though.

v_e - thank you for that explanation.

Did you read the 'Satanic verses'? I had a copy but never read it. I was told it is a hard read.

Like Mikey, I did enjoy 'Midnight's Children'.
Was that an attempt to criticise the post I addressed to Mikey, I wonder?
Got to the last fifty pages before I gave up, Ag. Your life will not be the poorer for not having read it. Nothing in it which any rational person should find as deeply offensive.

Yes, I keep meaning to read Midnoght's Children, but still haven't got round to it. Mind you, the book has been recommended by Mikey. Last time I listened to him I bought a Hudl!

When I was a little girl, aged about 6 or 7, my sister and I used to go to the playground at the end of Manningham Lane in Bradford (not far from my Grandma's house). Many years later I was driving home past said playground and I witnessed first-hand a crowd of blokes in Islamic dress burning copies of Salman Rushdie's book. It was very, very frightening - shocking, in fact to one brought up to respect freedom of speech and it was the first time that I realised the magnitude of the simmering opposition to our way of life.

Mr Rushdie would, I think, be dismayed by the retrogression.

Of course, while the book (Satanic Verses) is a drag it ws interesting to see how many of tthe great and the good were happy to side with the bigots and condemn Rushdie. To mention a few:

Price Charles.
John le Carre.
Roald Dahl.
Shirley williams.
Question Author
v_e - well, I have to agree with Mikey. It was a popular prizewinner and I enjoyed it.

Was the 'verses' universally condemned by Muslims?
The irony is the Rushdie was (up to the point when he broke the ultimate taboo - offend Muslims) a darling of the left. The book itself is far more critical of British society, the police in particular, than it is of Mohammed.

No ag Ayatollah Khomeini was the catalyst.
I believe sales of his book were quite high at the time with all these Muslims buying it so they could burn it.
Lol @ Noe schitt thereby making him rich enough to live in luxury, in the good old USA.
Question Author
What about the Kindle edition?
Kindling ag to start the bonfires.
Question Author
Togo, pity it was my thread, I was in line for a BA :(
ag, V_E has very adequately answered your question to me. I have nothing of any pertinent value to add.

Mikey, Your comprehension of Islam is abysmal.

Like others here, I too gave up on ‘The Satanic Verses’, although the title of that book emanates from, to say the least, curious origins.
