i didnt think they were particularly funny one-liners to be honest
but the true comedian makes cruddy stuff seem new and sparkling
[ as an aside: Bernard Manning introduced some frenz' tribute act the Everley Brothers as the Beverley Sisters and the audience laughed so much they possed themselves as tho they would never have thought of that in a thousand years ]
Well listening to the news today a lot of people thought that the highlight of the night was the gentleman in question , in the way he dealt with the issue
If he were as funny and 'on the nail' as Chris Rock was, yes.
But specifically, which part of the monologue are you referring to?
I watched it live, and thought he did an outstanding job. There were two incredibly bad 'jokes' but they happened outside the 10 minute opening (the frankly weird 'black history month' joke that no-one seemed to get, and the shocking Asian kids joke, that was completely unacceptable).
I'm thoroughly fed up with all this black versus white - and vice versa - rubbish. People need to get over themselves - whatever colour they happen to be.
The thing is that the Oscar organisers / those in charge knew about the reputation of Chris Rock and the type of jokes that he does .
So why choose him if they did not want any hint of controversy - why not choose someone less likely to rock the boat ?
Dare i say - they deliberately chose Chris Rock , precisely in order to make the audience cover their faces / stick their fingers in their ears , thus making the ceremony less duller than normal

naomi - indeed - however certain posters on this site continually make an issue over matters of this sort
sp1814, I'm discussing race, I've posted my opinion, and I haven't discouraged anyone else from discussing race. I trust that clears that little misunderstanding up for you.
Very easy to avoid the subject if you so wish. I think that race issues are important, and this is reflected in the interest such matters as the lack of diversity at the Oscars generates.
It would be fantastic if race were a non-issue, but I don't think we're any where near that point, so in my opinion, debate is worthwhile.
I myself can't stand reading news about football...so what I do is...not read stories about football.
