I open the car door and step out. Everytime I touch the door to close it, I get a TING of static shock. Different shoes, different parking surfaces. What can I do to prevent it?

You are charged differently to your car.. and as you may have rubber soles and the car has rubber tyres you are both insulated from true earth. If you exit the car and touch the metal door etc a high voltage discharge occurs and you get a a zap.Try exiting and holding onto the metal part of the door before your feet touch the ground.Do you find things better on a wet...

That happens to me lots, Maydup......really nips at times.....so.....

I flick the door with a fingernail tip first....don't know what this does but stops the shock when I do touch the door....x
Buy yourself an anti-static strip (to hang from the back of the car, brushing the ground)
If you gettin ting from car door stop by puttin evry ting in car boot/trunk.

Drive 'au natural' or get leather car seats. It is your clothing rubbing against the upholstery which I guess is not leather.
When I was a student undergoing many driving courses we were issued and expected to always wear thin leather driving gloves.Still got a pair but they don't fit anymore. :-)

As Delboy3 says, the strips that you fix to the rear of your car are meant to work:

I get that when wearing rubber soles. I touch ground with an umbrella (to earth myself) before getting out of car.
Maybe nylon mats in the car also
Tambo, why are you wearing two Beatles LP's on your feet? Buy some shoes!
Dont be rude tilly, youre just jealous of my wellies
I used to get this with my old car. I found that touching the window just before shutting the door helped. I don't know why.
Ditch the man-made fibre underwear! Urban legend - nurses in operating theatres should not wear nylon underwear lest sparks ignite the anaesthetic gases.
I'm not envious of your wellies, Tambo. I have wellies too. Mine are red.
Mine are black rubber riding boots
Static electricity is discharged through the tyres of aircraft on touchdown. Hence the suggestion above of an anti-static strip on the rear of the vehicle- made of the same material.

Thanks all! I will look at buying a strip to hang at the back of the car, and try flicking my finger at the window in the meantime!

Tambo, mine are red, rubber, walking the dog boots. She (Tilly) recognises my boots.
