Should we, for example, prohibit England football fans from displaying the St George's Cross when playing Islamic nations? It is, after all, symbolic of the Crusades and thus grossly offensive to many Muslims.
Given that, up until recently, we expected French visitors to this country to alight from Eurostar services at at a station called 'Waterloo', perhaps we need to separate historical contexts from current meanings?
