The left are going remarkably quiet now on this topic! Strange, since it's their policies that have made this man so popular.

Godwin's law is too selective. It could just as easily easily be applied to a number of occurrences, such as "derogatory reference to Lefties", i.e.
As a discussion progresses, the probability of a derogatory reference to Lefties approaches 1.
so any mention of Godwin's Law merely illustrates a paucity of factual debate on the part of the proponent.

Nevertheless the Republicans would still need to win with a candidate where a chunk of the party (and presumably the party supporters/voters) aren't keen on, against a Democratic party which doesn't seem to have the same extent of split views on their likely candidate. The uncertainty can't be good for markets though.
Excellent point, Canary. Of course there are circumstances – such as a complaint that a small-town traffic warden is behaving like the Gestapo – in which any mention of Hitler/Nazism is obviously absurd and Godwin's Law might be invoked. However, there are other situations – such as the run-up to the election of a President of the USA – where such a comparison is fully justified by the obvious parallels.
