// PP...I think that was in Primark.//

oops sozza - I should have generically put " Has the outlet offering the point of sale [or not as it turned out] been allowed to put its side ? [ "or had a whackeroonie at the stupid cow" as s/o-else above has put it ]

sp's url DOES say ... when tesco refused ....
but silly old me .....
Yes Peter...

//A Tesco spokesperson said, "All our store colleagues are trained in the responsible selling of alcohol, but we recognise an error has been made in this instance. We're pleased Ms Wain has accepted our apology and will continue to shop with us."//

We're damned when we do and damned when we don't.

Personally I believe the till operator was wrong (if the sketchy details in the article is to be believed) however sometimes it's very tricky line when selling age related products. We make mistakes, we're not infallible but the dire threats and warnings us till operators are given regarding booze, fags etc is enough to give anyone the wobbles when it comes to selling them.
boo..there is concern..and meglamonia !
Gromit...that's awful.
I'm sure the Tesco employee thought they were following store rules on selling alcohol. OK they made a mistake. You can hardly expect them all to be experts in social work, mental health and recognising potential issues. If they were they probably wouldn't be working in Tesco.
I don't think this was a display of megalomania by the assistant just got it wrong that's all, anyone who has ever been challenged at a till knows it isn't nice but it does happen.
Yes...I was refused alcohol in the co-op because my 21 year old daughter didn't have ID.
A store assistant is obliged to refuse to sell alcohol to someone who appears to be drunk. There is a high corelation between alcohol misuse and self harming in teenagers. As we only have Becci's word on the incident, perhaps she omitted that she had already had a drink when she tried to make her purchase.
If the young woman had appeared inebriated I am sure Tesco may have mentioned that in their response rather than admit an error had occurred.

I have known many self harmers, indeed I gave birth to one and for the most part there was no direct link to alcohol consumption.
Advice Gromit. When you cannot get yourself out of a deep hole, stop digging.
Like I said, Gromit, they are secretive, drinking puts them at risk of being caught.

// According to the NHS in Scotland, more than half of people who ended up in hospital because they’d deliberately injured themselves said they’ve drunk alcohol immediately before or while doing it.  //

What percentage of people have had a drink immediately before they call a total stranger 'A stupid cow'?
talk about a non event...checkout person makes "error"...girl says its ok now , got flowers, apology , doesnt want worker sacked blah blah..tescos apologises blah blah...

whats strange ?
Mamyalynne
If you are implying that I have had a drink, you are mistaken, I haven't.

My judgement of stupid cow is not because she self harmed, it s based on her actions afterwards.

I wonder if Tescos would have sold her a sharp knife?
I have no idea.

Should it be in the parers as an event, no - should she write articles to help other self harmers, probably a good idea.
the article is strange too .. " a queue of about 3 people" seems odd that if there were 3 people, she couldn't count there were 3 - probably exaggerating!
how did they kniw where to send the flowers to?

Even if the checkout assistant had made an error, there is a way to handle the situation and from the story.

I will assume the truth of what occurred, acknowledging we are only hearing one side of the story - but there was a way to deal with this so that the shopper wasn't embarrassed. A discreet conversation with supervisor would have been the sensitive way to handle this.

And the checkout assistant said it was Tesco policy, when it clearly isn't.
