Islam appears to be a cyclic religion. Because the demands of the Koran make for a lifestyle that to many is intolerable then by mutual consent standards 'slip'. People ignore the intolerable bits and begin to live a more human lifestyle which fundamentalists see as decadent. Eventually when it has moved too far away from the demands of the Koran a fundamentalist movement sweeps 'out of the desert' chopping off limbs and heads and taking slaves in the time honoured tradition of Islam. This has gone on since Islam was invented, it is built into the belief system, a mixture of intolerance and the intolerable makes for an unstable social system. The current instabilities are normal, just the beginning of a new cycle.
