ABers who regularly criticise the Mail for being a 'Right-Wing rag' and for being bias in their reporting, should take a look at today's reports, headlined:

economics, pure and simple. not only can china mine raw coal cheaper than anyone else, they can coke it cheaper than anyone else too. since 2014 the UK has had no coking plants of its own.

Don't think we import from China? I thought China was an importer rather than an exporter of coal?

Gromit ^^ ALL the coal is imported ! There is no suitable coal produced in the UK. ( In fact I believe there is no coal produced in the UK at all, a few 'moth balled' mines but that's it)
Yet more 'Carbon Footprint' importing the coal!

there are no deep mines left open in the UK - but strip mining continues in many parts of the UK, amounting to 26 sites with a combined output of 10M tonnes in 2015.
