the perpetrators are minors and cannot be named. sentencing guidelines state that for under 18s in cases like this, detention for 12 years "at her majesty's pleasure" is the starting point before aggravation or mitigation is considered.

Beyond belief what they did, should be named and shamed so we will always know the horror they inflicted on a innocent vulnerable woman. No doubt they will be imprisoned educated, all too young etc given anonymity society should shun them!

I hope NJ can give us some more info here, but my best guess is that main reason that the names are not being given out, is that they are juveniles. The Judge may decide to over-ride this and I think he probably will.

This is an awful case....these two girls appeared to have acted as worse than animals....where were the parents is all of this ?

In reality these girls will get out, probably by early 20s and get new identities and means to life (same as Jamie Bulger's killers).
The horror of a mind that could do that has no right to live. They must be truly evil and should be sentenced to death.

What I dread in these cases is that one day, one of my sons might ( unknown to all of us) meet and marry one of these pieces of depravity, and then this hellcat vixen might become the mother of my grandchildren. And might kill them.

Agree with Prudie. There is a stratum which is truly vile. I'm sorry for saying this (I have spent my life with disadvantaged kids), I really am - but in 30 yrs. I have met perhaps 2 irreclaimables; unrecoverable bad kids and I think that is more than the average.

They have a long history of absconding from the care home and getting in trouble with the police.

Eddie....but why were these girls in care, and why do we have so many children in care ?

I haven't checked but I presume these girls were not orphans. Do due poor education and parenting skills, more and more kids are going into care, and this problem needs to be addressed.

But having said, you don't need O levels to realise that what hey had done to this poor woman was wrong in any way....where were their basic human values ?

Surely you don't need care or parents to know that what you're doing goes against human values. I don't think babies left to their own devices without guidance would all grow up to be bullying vicious monsters. I don't care what poor start they had, these 2 girls must be inherently evil. I know this point is meaningless compared to the horror of what they did, but since when has anyone been able to phone the police to ask for a lift home? Is it because the police knew they were bad or vulnerable, in which case why didn't they have a quick peek to see what had gone on in the house?

I'm not convinced that inherent evil is really a thing. I suppose it's very difficult to know one way or another. But I'd have thought it better to at least try to help "redeem" these two girls, rather than condemning them to death.

No matter how long they get, though, it will never be long enough. It never is, really. Only inflicting exactly the same prolonged, painful fate that befell Angela Wrightson would be "enough" punishment. Justice in this country is meant to achieve more than that.

We can never know the reason they were put 'in care' the Social services operate in almost total secrecy over such matters. But the most common reason is that the mother was incapable of looking after them due to problems such as mental health, drugs, drink or that they had been abused as children and it was not considered safe for them to remain at home.
It is a far wider problem than just this case, all the 'sexual grooming' cases were girls from care homes as well!

This case, others like it, stabbing each other, stabbing their teachers etc, what is the matter with some of our young today?

It is reported that these two savages were in care so what of their parents they should be named and shamed, if for nothing else, at least for bring these two into the world.
