Can't think why our resident commentator on all things rainbow related would have such a narrow view.
I only mention it now so you can prepare yourself for what's sure to follow. :-)

This is an interesting question. First, I had no idea that SA had legalised same sex marriages. That shows incredible maturity, especially in the face of horrific attitudes that many Africans have to gay people.
Sad news is - Africa is probably decades behind us in recognition of equal rights.
Maybe even a century or two.

All that has happened to South Africa is that the ruling elite are a small, tight knit, closed group of Black politicians rather than white ones. Nothing has changed apart from for the worse since the white's lost power. The poor, black and white, are even poorer and the rich, Black and white, are even richer. The police and the politicians are still as corrupt as ever.
The problem with Africa as a whole is tribalism. The thousands of various tribes hate each other far more than they ever disliked the white rulers.
All the ruling Black politicians in South Africa are from the same small tribe, the rest have no chance. Same happens all over Africa, tribe comes first everything else is secondary.
