PD is short for "pédéraste", which is a somewhat archaic word to mean "homosexual", and the precise translation is a bit nuanced to be sure. Roughly speaking, though, I would say that the statement "il est PD" isequivalent to the English "he's a homo". It's curt and tactless, as many such abbreviations of formal descriptions are; some would go further and say "faggot", and the intent (of curt dismissal, if not actual offence) is certainly similar.
The ruling is a little bizarre, as it seems to amount to accepting the "some of my best friends are ____" defence.

was the case because he had been sacked and called a faggot? Or that he had been called a faggot and that his sacking was because he was gay?
As far as I can make out he was sacked for being off sick!! Not because he was gay. The fact he was called a faggot is probably hurtful but Seems to be just a crass insult. I have been called a fat old Hefner before and again is hurtful but is just a crass insult.
