The appeal is only against the length of sentence and yes the court can increase it rather than decrease it.
The point is that a sentence of 5 years or more is never considered 'spent' , so if he can get it down to 4 years 11 months there will be a time when he does not have to declare the sentence unless he is applying for a job with children or vulnerable people.
