Places don`t have to be foreign owned to fail the standards though. http://www.northdevonjournal.co.uk/FOOD-HYGIENE-RATINGS-lowest-scoring-businesses/story-28992572-detail/story.html I know a couple of these establishments well and they seemed very good "out front". You can never be sure what goes on behind the scenes.
Don't food establishments (take aways and restaurants) have to display their food hygiene rating?
In my experience they only display their standards when they have a good review.
Apparently not!

I got this from the Food Standards Agency:

Businesses in England and Northern Ireland do not have to display their rating. So if you see a business without a hygiene rating sticker or certificate, you’ll have to decide if you want to eat or buy food from there without knowing the hygiene standards.

Putting a hygiene rating on show is a good advertisement for businesses that meet the requirements of food hygiene law.

A good food hygiene rating is good for business.

The situation is different in Wales. Businesses that get a new rating after 28 November 2013, must by law display a sticker showing their rating in a prominent place in all entrances to the premises.

- See more at: https://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/hygiene-rating-schemes/ratings-find-out-more-en/fhrs#sthash.FTaFWfAr.dpuf

I suppose the rule to follow is this:

If you don't see a sticker..walk on by.
Yep 237SJ...that's what I'm thinking.

I'd never given it a thought before...always assumed that the display of the rating was mandatory.

I don't see why it isn't to be honest.
My local curry house (that had a rating of 1) has a sticker with their Tripadvisor award in the window. They certainly didn`t have their food rating up there. The last time I went there (definitely the last) I posted my review on Tripadvisor and mentioned the low food rating. Tripadvisor didn`t publish it because they said they only wanted my opinion of my experience there and not the facts.
So what is the point of FSA. Another toothless quango type concern. If a food business is in urgent need of hygiene improvement why are they not closed down until remedial improvements are carried out to a better standard.
You can see how seriously this emporium takes it's hygiene responsibilities by the food waste dumped at the back of the shop. The Palmera restaurant neighbours this shop and is also allowed to trade.
These people have no idea and no concern about basic hygiene.

I would not go near a takeaway to eat. If I want a curry and have no time to cook my own, Marks and Sparks is the only venue for a Chinese, Indian or Thai take home.
When I worked in a Chinese restaurant, the cooks, etc, were 'busy people' who were always cleaning things when it was quiet.
My friend worked in an Indian restaurant and he reckoned, not only were they lazy people but they did unspeakable things to/in the curry.
Naturally, I can't claim that happens/happened everywhere and I only had his word for what happened in the Indian.
I can tell you for sure, cos I was there, that when we had a major fire in our kitchen, the owner of the Indian came over to, unsuccessfully, try and buy various items of the ruined food. My 'owner' had quite a heated row with him.
Svejk, I must admit that can fully believe you with the story regarding the Oriental establishment. For a little while (3 or 4 months) way way back, I repaired commercial microwave ovens, as part of a monitoring survey for Sharps. Most calls that I made were early doors, ie before midday. The Chinese Restaurants were mainly clean and busy before I arrived. The "others" far from.
You can`t really generalise though - I got really bad food poisoning from a 5 star hotel in Bejing. It can happen anywhere
No you can't. I had a bad dose of salmonella (if you want to lose a lot of weight fast, that's the boy) And I'm fairly certain I got it from a Chinese takeaway. (half-cooked chicken omelette)
My friend went on a two centre holiday to Singapore and Bali. When she came home, she ended up in Coppets Wood isolation hospital with salmonella and paratyphoid. She got it from eating street food (something I would never do). I remember going to my company health services to ask about it because she had been staying at my place and I was concerned that I might have caught something. Thankfully, I didn`t because I meticulous about food hygiene. Food poisoning is easily done though
I once went to a restaurant in Phuket and whilst I was eating, one of the so-called chefs, walked straight into the dining room, pulled down his trousers and actually defecated by the coat rack.

...but then I put my glasses on, and realised it was just Tracey Emin and she was doing an art installation.

It sold for £680,000 at Sotherbys the following year.

(Do I win?)
When I went to Thailand the only street food I ate was a corn on the cob!
^Yes, you've retained your AB clown of the year title,,,,again.
I remember the days when a video had to be shown on aircraft to show people how to use the loos because they used to crap on top of the toilet seat. Happy days!
Svejk

But surely this isn't a serious thread?

Is it?

Just seemed to have evolved a series of random stories about who had the worst stomach ache where.
Why the way Svejk...one comma is more than enough for most sentences.

(Smiley face).
