is the union flag now so inextricably linked to the National Front, EDL, and other sundry extremist right wing goups, that Councillor Harvey has a valid point?

No she has not, she appears to be a very stupid woman and should be removed from her office as Town and county councillor.
The jury has spoken - why not hand drawn and quarter.
sorry 'hang'
Eejit.

A few oversensitive visitors to dictate what bunting is used, utter carp!
if the "foreigners" dont like it then tough schitt...

I'm glad this silly woman has retracted !
I could hardly believe the Irish cause/reference in the first link, now I see that if they asked if it was HQ of National Front it was obviously a tongue in cheek joke.
Well she's had her 15 minutes worth.
Irish visitors. That's ridiculous!!

Stupid PC woman.
And why, nowadays, does every little kerfuffle have to be described by a name ending in "gate"?
No, she doesn't have a valid point. I don't link the union flag with those organisations. If foreign visitors are upset - and I don't think for a moment they will be - so be it. People like her create and exacerbate racial disharmony.

I know what she means, when I visited Ireland every time I saw their flag I expected to be kneecapped and disappeared by the IRA.

Cos that's how the world works, innit, soon to be ex-councillor.
stupid woman!
The Union Flag is only the Union Jack when it is flying from the Jack staff (see the link?) of a Royal Navy ship. It is raised as son as a line is on shore, or the anchor is dropped. It is struck, (taken down) as soon as the last line leaves the shore or the anchor breaks the surface. At ANY other time it is the Union Flag.

Douglas, when i last visited ireland i was in Carrick and Larne, and i saw red hand flags everywhere, in houses, shops and flying from lamp-posts. very intimidating.
Some would say that you didn't visit Ireland at all, mushroom, but Ulster or at a push, Norn Irn.
Anyhoo, we both lived to tell the tale despite the risk of a nasty corner flick from a brisk wind.
