If you physically restore a monument, does the brick have to come from the same source, the same quarry? Who can say that parts of a relic were not repaired out of expediency in the past, centuries ago, with some alien ingredient?
With our own (British) churches and listed buildings, repairs have been done in the past to avoid further deterioration. I don't think we have any less respect for such buildings or regard them as contaminated.
As someone else posted, in this case it is a gesture which has been done in the right spirit. That's good enough for me.
