I've just come out of hospital after a major operation and am not sleeping well as uncomfortable to sleep on my back. Neighbours round the back who I don't know, never seen, got a new dog about 2 months ago and it yaps when they let it out at the crack of dawn like a wake up call then yaps on and off during the day. This means I can't catch up with my sleep in the day and if I do, I'm suddenly woken. I've got to the point now that when it's not yapping,I'm listening for it, grr! I'm thinking of having a walk round if I can manage it to tell them my concerns. Worried about reaction. Will be in my dressing gown and surgical stockings and I look dreadful so I guess that would go in my favour. Why don't people think? Also what about people who work nights/ shifts, they must suffer too? I don't do earplugs by the way. So, how should I broach this? How do you stop a yapping dog after all, it surely gets on their nerves.

GAS MARK 8 FOR 3 HOURS ! lol
little you can do to stop a dog barking..other than tell council who can issue antisocial behaviour thingy to owner, but has to be proved and is a prolonged process...surely other neighbours are affected too..are they approachable..? perhaps an en masse visit ?

I am going to go round, just wondering what to say for best.
Only the owner can remedy the problem. If s/he is a reasonable person and shows concern (approach her in a friendly manner, do not condemn her) you could suggest she looks at;

Think they are chinese so hope they understand me, see grandma doing circuits around the garden every day though can't say ive seen her recently, maybe been replaced by the dog?!
Chinese eat dogs..perhaps it is next Sunday's dinner !
Could it be that part of the problem is your illness and if you weren’t ill, it wouldn’t be a problem? Noise from dogs, children, lawnmowers workmen and so on is part of life......Don’t suggest Jan Fennell, her methods have long been disproven. They are based on dominance and rank reduction which have no validity in dog behaviour science.
Disregard what has been said by woofgang. Jan Fennel has much to offer and her advice has been used with great success by us, our friends and family and led to happier dogs and owners.
Notice his/her reply to your question; it is (unbelievably) you that is the problem!

I was hoping that Murraymints! No, don't think cos Im ill, it would grate on anybody, I'm just looking for wise words to say to them without falling out or threats. Luckily not same street, they back on to us.
Drown out other sounds with your radio, tv, vacuum etc. Let others live their lives as freely as you wish to.
Unfortunately camelia - judge judy said some years back on her show -

"if you don't want sound - then don't live in a neighbourhood".

It is awful tho as I had a yapping dog facing me - morning noon and night. Everybody was affected - the poor dog was young but was suffering from arthritis.
go into amazon
u can get an anti dog barking device
not expensive
hang it on a fence facing house
discretely
no body can her it only the dog
hope it helps
should stop barking
^^I think that might be cruel and distressing for the dog.
ummmmm
it does no harm to animals
I didn't say it harmed them.
Poor little pooch Doesn't know He/She is upsetting you.. those little ferret type dogs think they're guard dogs and maybe put outside because they do the same inside whenever a dog passes. I do understand your concerns and hope you have a good rest and get well soon... if it yelps for help then be concerned one of your other neighbours felt fit to fix the problem.

BTW the German Shepard I look after thinks he's a mouse.
^^ The barking is clearly 'explained' by Jan Fennel - see above.
All dogs of any size, down to chihuahuas still carry the pack instincts brought down to them from the wolf. It barks to alert the alpha dog (the owner) that there might be danger. In the wild, the alpha-male will come to asses the situation, if he thinks there is danger he will address it by moving the pack, or fighting if he has to. If he sees no danger, he conveys that to the alarmed dog and it will stop.
The dog of which you speak simply needs re-assurance, but unfortunately this can only be given by the owner - who of course, isn't there.

I love dogs very much, but I do understand how a barking/yapping dog all the time can make people miserable. Just lately, there have been quite a few barking dogs in my neighbourhood, not close enough to bother us, but I would have hated to live any nearer as it would have bothered us, but suddenly it's all stopped and I can only assume that they have been reported to the Council and I think that's what you will have to do, if having a word with the owners doesn't help. Sometimes just a letter from the Council can make people change.
Alpa -wolf... yep definitely me. The Geman that I posted of has a really good temperament so I do allow him off the lead sometimes when its clear and adheres to the command structure of "I don't think so" he pricks his ears up like a meerkat looks about... and carries sniffing the ground.. in a manner that suggests I wanna go sniff that butt... however that Alpha-wolf is my guardian.
