It is - and I read the shorter book as well. This is by Wes Butters, former Radio One DJ and, if memory serves, one of the people behind that frog record that drove everyone mad and probably made him eight figures!

Not got there yet, I do remember he was 'entertaining' at the time though.
It's so sad because his early career colleagues talk about him being a wonderful actor and consummate professional, but he lost it all with career bitterness, and the loss of his beloved mother.

Absolutely right. Hawtrey was angered by the refusal to give him a leading role in the Carry Ons. His final appearance in Carry on Abroad (72) reflected his serious drink problem too. Incidentally, Kenneth Williams was devoted to his mother too and her death accelerated his demise.
Anyway, a very fine actor.
