There are several 'layers' of Police in France, the Gendarmes are always armed, town Police aren't as a matter of course.

I beg to differ with shoota. Every police man and woman I have ever seen In Paris has been armed, and they are not the Gendarmerie.

The smaller towns have a municipal Police responsible to the mayor, they are not armed. The Gendarmerie Nationale and the Police Nationale are armed.
You have to know which set of 'flics' you are dealing with.

I do not know what some sites do differently but; this is yet another time where the sound will happily blare out so that the bottom of the road can hear it, and yet the visuals are simply a white space unless one freezes the non-visual video when one gets to see a still picture.

I think that the 'marchers' were right wing protesters at the presence of immigrants in Calais. Whether they attacked the Police because they were the Police or because the driver was black open to speculation.
