As they are retired, presumably some of them might have been around to vote in the 70's regarding the Common Market?
Next question is if we were to remain in, surely there couldn't be a United European Army? Surely that flies in the face of NATO? (I'm just curious)

The British Army has more men based in Germany and Cyprus than it does in the UK. If we need an aircraft carrier we have to ask France to 'lend' us one of theirs. Every major Navy ship has a complement of European sailors and our men serve in European ships. The Air force operates joint exercises / shares aircraft with European nations.
None of this will change in or out of the EU. In reality we already have a joint European Army, Navy and Air force.
