Sadly, The army may have to step in to stop mad Erdogan. Democracy is being undermined, he is arresting the opposition, closing newspapers that disagree with him, jailing writers and arresting military officers.
Turkey is about to be hit with an economic crisis. Tourism, which accounts for lots of jobs and earnings has failed this year. Putin ordered Russian tourists to holiday elsewhere after the shooting down of a Russian jet over Syria. They have obeyed and stayed away in their millions. Likewise British, German and Dutch are not going for fear of migrants, dead bodies on the beach, or terrorist attacks.
By the Autumn, Erdogans core vote will have crumbled, but the opposition have been neutralused. A military coup will save the country.

Modern Turkey was the result of a military coup which took power from the establishment - the monarchy and the clergy. The revolution and consequent republic was overseen by a General, Mustapha Karmel (Ataturk). Unlike here where the military is part of the establishment, in Turkey the people see it as anti-establishment, and as an overseer of the rulers. When Turkish Governments, become too religious, corrupt or just bad, the milirary step in. Erdogan has been busily arresting military leaders, and has been getting away with it because the economy has been booming. A sharp recession will see the military act.
it's odd that turkey - and egypt, whose tourist industry is also on its bottom - hasn't considered a switch to halal tourism. apparently that's an untapped market worth $trillions....

I totally agree with you Gromit, and it is getting dangerous. I read some where that Erdogan has given powers back to the generals this week to deal with security matters that were taken away back in 2013, but I am unable to find any links on the net. I really hope the EU challenges his brutal campaign against the Kurds but that is unlikely given Germany's recent weakness to allow him to demand the prosecution of one of its citizens who insulted him not long ago.
