/// had I been alive then would I have been brave enough to get involved even on a small scale? ///

Had you been a male you would have most likely had no choice.

But then we males have been expected to do the dangerous work for years, some with little reward but the monarch's shilling.
As her Boarding House facilities (for officers) would be a money spinner I suspect a medal from the Crimea may add some entrepreneurial value back in
blighty.
Apparently Florence was not quite what she was cracked out to be either and detested by the W/O.
I'm not sure Retro, if the 100,000's of soldiers were fans of the War Office either !
I wasn't aware we were discussing the males during that time, hence the gist of my replies.

Retrocop, yes - I too have read derogatory tales of Florence Nightingale .

History can do many things to inflate or even in some cases underplay the exploits of those in the past and of course people are human and have failings.

I think this is a major part of the problem

///it will be unveiled this month at St Thomas Hospital where Nightingale founded her nursing school, and Seacole has no connection to whatsoever///

I did ask if that was the problem earlier.

Oh, excuse me, I must have missed it.
St Thomas' hasn't forgotten Florence as I mentioned on my Wiki link re memorials/museums.

http://www.florence-nightingale.co.uk/
No need , I presume there is a reason they chose that venue for the statue.

Is there a Link between Seacole and St Thomas's?
As far as I know, there isn't.
Florence Nightingale supporters ... who on earth are they?

Total waste of money imo (as are all statues) In these times of austerity wouldn't a plaque have sufficed?

I'm sure Mary Seacole (tbh never heard of her) would rather the money go to war veterans wouldn't she?
Mary Seacole ... The lady with the wine and sarnies.

Not quite as catchy as Flo's is it?
I'm sure you are right, I also imagine that most of those who have statues dedicated to them would have felt the same.

I was sorry to see the Race Card played on page one, but not unexpected I suppose.
Why are Florence Nightingale supporters even bothered by this?

She has the following:

1. A statue in Waterloo Place, Westminster, London, just off The Mall.
2. Three statues in Derby
3. A continuing care unit at the Royal Derby Hospital (The Nightingale-Macmillan)
4. A stained glass window in St Peter's Church, Derby.
5. The Florence Nightingale Museum at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
6. Another museum at Claydon House, Buckinghamshire.
7. She has another museum in Istanbul.
8. A bronze plaque, attached to the plinth of the Crimean Memorial in the Haydarpaşa Cemetery, Istanbul.
9. A statue at Chiba University in Chiba, Japan
10. A bust at Tarlac State University, Tarlac City, Philippines.

Oh, and let's not forget - she appeared on £10 for nearly twenty years.

But oh dear...Mary Secole gets a bust and they're up in arms.

They really need to get a life.

Morons.

And another Race Card here, Moron!
Never heard of her.
