Jourdain, every single voting slip is kept and can be examined and checked.
Every count is overseen by several independent neutral referees.
Every count can be questioned and a recount ordered if there is the slightest sign of mismanagement.

To say the government will rig the result is absurd. It would not last 10 seconds. It is not the government itself that runs an election or referendum it is an independant body ( I think it is The Electoral reform society)
In or out we can be utterly certain that this vote has been 100% fair and above board.
You are questioning the most basic principle of democracy and freedom!

After demands of tampering from the Austrian public, there is now to be a re-count of their last election.
The Oldham West postal voting was definitely 'bent', as was the South Thanet election.
"Too close to call" elections are always dodgy, that's how GW Bush got into power. A decisive win (either way) would be the best outcome.
I can understand suspicion about Oldham West, but South Thanet?
Councils run elections but the Electoral Commission issues guidance as to how best to run elections and also regulates political parties' funding. For a Referendum, the Commission is responsible for verifying the count and announcing the result.
You'll be needing throat lozenges after that Svejk.
^Page not found, Khandro.
There were all sorts of dodgy 'goings on' at S.Thanet.
Can't really blame the mental pygmies in Parliament being terrified of a colossus like Nigel keeping them honest.
hey look everybardy - an exit poll !
Thanks folks. You see, I know about votes in Asian areas where groups of elders go round the houses and 'help' to fill in the postal votes. It's not a huge stride to suspect 'fiddling'. Sorry, EDDIE.
@gordiescotland

Unless UKIP has fallen back since May, I think we can say 4 million votes are secure for leave, which is 8-9% of the electorate (45m quoted this morning) and most of us would imagine an uncertainty zone of about 10% so I think it could be a close finish, either way.

On the assumption that the young outnumber the old (depends where you draw the dividing line, heh) and some of the older voters may be voting with their grandkids in mind, I think it might go with Remain.

I like being proven wrong though ;-)
^^
oops, wrong thread; see "Only forty minutes to go"
