I agree with 237, the firesides are heavily into the CAP, the 2nd highest area of expense in the EU. Without the UK they'll have no one to fork out for French farmers with 2 ducks farming a postage stamp so they'll have to use their own dosh to stop the farmers filling Paris with Tractors. QED

The ex-Warsaw pact (EU enlargement) countries should have got together into a separate 'club' and worked their way to prosperity before 'promotion' to the EU. They were not in the same league as us and we've "brain-drained" their best talented, hardest workers, leaving their at-home popultations even less likely to catch up with us, other than by milking EU net contributors, like us.
EU fed our resentment for it as an institution by sponging off us and taking the "oh, you can afford it, old chum" attitude.

"Surely in the EU someone has the gumption to realise that people have had enough of control from Brussels & therefore if they wish to keep it going there should be a complete re-design of the EU from within."
Some of us were hoping the UK could do that. Not with this limp government, but maybe a future one.
