I dropped History for O-level so external teaching stopped at the Tudors, as I recall. I'm no bookworm so the gaps have been filled by the likes of Time Team, Schama, Starkey, Oliver, Hughes, Beard and others.

Neil Oliver spun the yarn that Scotland was broke and conceded to a request for union to get it out of the hole. No cash, no army, etc.

Ah, but your explanation, YMB, is based on a supposition that the Scots you refer to are a form of unpleasant sickness BEFORE coming down to England, which they aren't. Obviously, they mostly annoy you only once they get here. Hence - if they do develop into such a disease - it's south of the border. So, again, what does that make England?
Whatever, it's 'way past time for you to try to make up your OWN means of criticising Scots humorously, rather than constantly using an unamusing saying created by someone else.
