Until article 50 is triggered, nothing changes regarding the Uk”s membership of the EU and there is no timescale under which article 50 must be triggered. None. It could be triggered tomorrow or 50 years from now. The EU could of course expel the Uk but that would need a unanimous vote.
It is not necessary to invoke article 50, according to today's newspaper. It is simply necessary to repeal the European Communities Act 1972 and all its amendments by introducing a Government bill. The move would simply scrap the law ratifying Britain's membership of the EU. This would give us the authority to negotiate our exit.
While this Act remains in place we have to go on handing vast sums of money to the EU and we are still subject to its demands. The move was outlined by Lord Stoddart of Swindon, a Labour peer. He says the preoccupation with article 50 is a red herring and requires us to go cap in hand to Brussels for permission to leave.
