Perhaps the new Mayor of London should make this his top priority, and perhaps increase the number of stop and searches?

I don't suppose a description of the suspects could assist the Met apart from kids on bicycles?? No. I didn't think so. Seems enough cameras were at the fore when police and paramedics were fighting to save this poor lad's life. Did we really need to see the bit of pavement where he died. I bet some 'news pig' was kicking himself in being too slow to get the blood on the pavement as well.

I have a 16 year old nephew, and I asked him last year about these rumours
I keep hearing of boys carrying knives. He said that he knew loads of boys his age that carried knives to his school, which is hardly in a area of high crime.

I then felt guilty about that beautiful Swiss Army knife that I gave him for Xmas.

Basic laws on knives
It is illegal to:

sell a knife to anyone under 18 (16 to 18 year olds in Scotland can buy cutlery and kitchen knives) unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less, eg a Swiss Army knife
carry a knife in public without good reason - unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less
carry, buy or sell any type of banned knife
use any knife in a threatening way (even a legal knife, such as a Swiss Army knife)
Lock knives (knives with blades that can be locked when unfolded) are not folding knives, and are illegal to carry in public without good reason.

The problem is with the mentality of the kids who are prepared to so easily take a life, if they lose the knives they'll find a bottle, a stick or anything else they can weaponise.

I think few of these stabbings fail to result in convictions. An advertising campaign aimed at the potential assailants (something along the lines of, 'Use a knife and you might spend 15 to 20 years in prison.') could make them think twice.

Retro...can't see any law against giving a 16 year old his first Swiss Army knife. If I thought he was going to take it to school a threaten anyone with it, I would never have given it to him in the first place.

You are correct. There isn't providing the blade doesn't exceed 3" which I doubt a swiss army knife does. I have carried a folding knife all my adult life. Carry one as I type.(Army Jack knife).
If my nephew had not attained 18yrs and was still at school I think I would refrain from handing a knife to them. This is not now the day of the Queen's scout where a long bladed, bone handled Bowie Knife can be strapped to your belt in the street.
mikey. It doesn't matter where you live Swansea or Stepney kids of 10 are carrying ALL manner of knives in the street and at school. They are even known to kill their teachers with them. Swiss Army knives are legal but lethal!!

The reason why your stats say only cautions are given is because they estimate (Home Office) that stricter legislation that had been proposed would mean thousands more prison cells per year to cope.!!

That means that in 8% of cases there was some action taken and if this vicious gang who killed this lad had been part of the 8%, then he would still be alive.

Better to carry out a thousand unsuccessful stop and searches, if just one successful one happens to saves a life from being taken.

8% of stop and searches resulted in action by the police, but not all of those were for weapons offences. They would also include drugs offences and stolen property.
