//The verdict is a blow to the BMA, as it had encouraged its junior doctors to agree to the new contract.//

Not involved enough to make a fair decision, but it seems that the BMA's junior doctors committee was out of touch with it's members; and as many have stated, it seems that pay isn't the main issue.
Their union accepted the deal and no matter how much they protest they will eventually have the deal enforced upon them.
I was surprised by this decision and, on the face of it, even disappointed rather. The deal that was on offer looked pretty reasonable as a compromise, although I didn't study it in detail so perhaps there was some fine print that would justify rejecting the deal. Or not. Either way, there have been better times for such a dispute to drag on and on and on.
they know the terms and conditions before studying to become doctors..'ems the rules !!!
The rules were being changed... ?
being a doctor is supposed to be a vocation..not a job..in which flexibility re conditions is to be expected.... rather like telling the troops to down tools mid fire !!
All the same, it is also a job, and while some flexibility is to be expected, surely there is a line somewhere? I don't know if the contract in question falls on the wrong side of the line, really, but the idea that such a line of reasonable change doesn't exist is a bit far-fetched.

arguments on both sides Jim....but if you can't stand the heat..don't even go into the kitchen !
Depends if the kitchen was cold when you went in and some hunt turned up the heat !

Jim, //while some flexibility is to be expected, surely there is a line somewhere?//

I think the flexibility in this case very much concerns the government's attempts to ensure that hospitals work as efficiently at weekends as they do on weekdays. The doctors, it seems, don't agree.
55% of doctors in their second year post degree ( FY 2)
have declined to apply for the third year in medicine ....

figures from Jeremy Hunt himself and he just shrugged his shoulders and said oh well we will get them off the boat ....

of which my nephew is one ( IT in London )
and my nieve is another ( GP in NZ)
// to ensure that hospitals work as efficiently at weekends as they do on weekdays. The doctors, it seems, don't agree.//

hahahaha oh good one... try working in a hospital over the week end !

this particular efficiency drive involves doing routine lists and clinics ( emergencies unaffected ) cost neutrally ( no extra money for seven day working than you get for five ) without X ray or labs ......
As long as it doesn't impact on the "career" of Yannis Gourtsoyannis, he wont mind either way. Strangely enough the last 5 letters of his second name, I think, are Greek for satisfaction.

Peter Pedant, they have been offered a very substantial pay rise.

///oh well we will get them off the boat///

PP, do you have a link to that please?
What the heck is your nieve?
baldric - surely you could pick that as niece
Perhaps the Socialist Worker banners are a clue to what's going on.

Big clues there Svejk imo.
//55% of doctors in their second year post degree ( FY 2)

ie only 45% really wanted to be doctors in the first place. Or 55% realised that they weren't up to it. I wonder what their plans are now? Politics? Advertising? Sports therapy degree? Teaching? They cant all join Charities can they?
if you work in the public sector then you have to be prepared to work over weekends as a matter of course....
