It appears that Sir Cliff Richard has instructed his legal people to commence procedings in suing the BBC & South Yorkshire Police. The amount quoted is £1 million which has been calculated as loss of earnings.Hopefully he secures every penny and these two organisations will be more careful in future about how they conduct themselves.

What I'd really like to see is his avaricious and thoroughly untrustworthy accusers held to account, and maybe that would herald the end of this disturbing trend of making appalling accusations which can ruin someone's reputation, career can whole life.

The police had been investigating Cliff for several months and a BBC investigative journalist got wind of it from a leak from the police. South Yorkshire police didn't want the info made public, and Cliff fore warned before a search of his house could be conducted, so they did a deal with the journalist to hold off publication until after the raid. That is how the BBC knew of the planned raid and were able to televise it.
There had been a complaint against Cliff and the police are obliged to investigate it. The BBC are a news organisation, and are there to report the search of Cliff's home.

I don't agree with this. Like Gromit says the police were doing their job. If he sues the BBC he's suing license payers which is most of us.

Ummmm, a man's reputation has been dragged through the mud. He is well within his right to sue anyone involved in tarnishing his reputation.

Mud sticks, no matter how innocent you are.

I have no opinion either way but I wouldn't want to dismiss his accusers as liars.

good i hope he takes them ***s to the cleaners, how them allegations can destroy a man, i know because i was accused of rape 15 years ago and it brought me to near killing myself , police knew she was lying and a nutter and had made same before on previous boyfriend but they told me after it that they had to act and arrest me even though i was released 2 hours later.
turned my life into a living hell !!! and that bi**h is still out there somewhere doing it to someone else.

I've said for a long time that the accused in a rape or sexual assault case shouldn't be named until charges are brought. There would still be time for other accusers to come forward, should there be any, but there have been cases where the complainant has been proved to have lied and remained anonymous throughout. It's just not fair.

If it can be proved 100% that they lied then they should be prosecuted and named. Often the case is 'not enough evidence' and not the fact that they are lying.

If Cliff is going to sue he should be suing the individuals that took the decision to film his home being raided by the police, not licence payers who will end up footing the bill for any fines imposed.

Can never tell with the law, but suing a news company for showing news has to be questionable.

I at first thought 'good for him', but then I read Gromit's post and changed my mind. I still feel very sorry for him though as this will tarnish the rest of his life.
