My knowledge of Turks is limited to my occasional meetings with them as a young soldier on UN duty in Cyprus. Right or wrong, my experiences with them left me to deem them as almost sub-human. That opinion hasn't changed in 30 years and as I've repeatedly stated I'll NEVER visit nor holiday in a Muslim country.

They gave up on that several years ago when they realised it wasn't going to happen.

The migrant deal personally brokered with the EU by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, was an unexpected opportunity. That is now dead, and for his efforts, Davutoğlu was removed from office in May by Erdogan.

There is a power struggle in Turkey between reformists who want to be pro Western, pro Europe and Conservative Islamists who want None of that, and wants Turkey to be leader of the Islamic world.

The Islamists, represented by Erdogan are winning, and winning big after the events this weekend.

I'm struggling to see how something that didn't happen should be linked with this ... Anyway are you saying that desperate measures like beheading soldiers have been called for?

I guess it indicates that in some parts of the world it is not wise to surrender and effectively sign your own death warrant. Granted "the mob" were those who committed the execution, but any authority that really had control would ensure the safety of those who had surrendered, and would be investigating & arresting those who committed the murder.

A coup is effectively a civil war, hopefully that does not last long. Prisoners are therefore prisoners of war and under the Geneva Convention, granted rights. It seems that Turkey are unable or unwilling to fulfil their obligations under that convention, nor indeed under their own laws.

In addition I also notice from the BBC that the crackdown toll has already passed 50,000. Surely no one can reasonably believe that this wasn't planned for action at the first opportunity ?

alledgedly, most of those arrested (so quickly) were on the faeces list for some years, on advance of this.

On Twitter, I saw a flightradar24 screenshot of Erdogan's private jet, circling, displaying its registration letters (which avgeeks would know) and (possible image manipulation) alleged F16s on its tail and, mysteriously not firing upon it.

Most private planes anonymise their registrations for safety from stalkers, journos, terrorists etc and military jets rarely show at all (last Royal Flypast, only the tanker plane and a C17 showed up at all; the pleasure of watching the Red Arrows leave base and time their appearance to the second is denied us).

Very odd for a coup to mobilise without first securing their quarry before the kickoff. Looks increasingly like he suckered the plotters into mobilising and he got away from a restaurant with minutes to spare, by all accounts.
