Gp Facing Racist Abuse

What would you do if you were an Asian GP faced with a patient demanding treatment from a white doctor?

If it were me, and my practice were in London, I would be tempted to refer them to a white locum based in the Isle of Skye.

Any other suggestions?

At our surgery, you can specify a male or female GP. This is not an exclusive privilege of Muslim women.

Why do you think that?

Tell him OK, but if he needed a doctor over the W/End out of hours and I am on duty, would he prefer me not come?

The problem is that some people don't like Asians in the same way that some people don't like Europeans. Similarly some people don't like men, others don't like women. The thought of having their innards prodded about by somebody they don't like is a bit unpleasant for them to contemplate. There's no rhymn nor reason for it - it's just the way some people are.

People should be entitled to dislike others on sight.

And they do - no argument there.

Therefore, if a patient makes it clear that it is simply the doctor's face he dislikes, rather than his or her ethnicity or gender, there would be no problem.

Correct and arrange their appointments politely requesting what they would like and if the surgery can accommodate them , they will.

If they can't they'll have to go elsewhere.

I suggest it is a matter for the individual to decide how much or how little tact and diplomacy to use in this situation.

I recall queuing in the bank for a counter clerk, and the old lady in front of me offered to let me go ahead of her because the next free operative was an Asian man.

There was a supervisor a few feet away who came over and asked her if there was a problem, and the supervisor and I waited to see if she would be called out on her racism. She declined, and crept over to the counter, where the clerk, who had witnessed the exchange, to his credit, served her with standard efficiency and civility, neither of which she deserved.

New judge, I think you should add 'voice of reason' to your ID. How right you are, people have preferences and it's not s matter of demarcation, it is actually a matter of choice. However in this day and age if anything is remotely of a non politically flavour then all hell is,let loose! Why can't it be a case of you take your choice and that's it? What The Funicular do people have to add the racist, religious or whatever you choose...card? OMG how complicated life has become since multiculturalism has been forced upon upon us. There are some peeps who have a case to answer but they hide behind being 'politically correct' so they project a clean and wholesome image! Total hogwash yet it continues daily.

I've never asked a Doctor performing an internal on me what his or her sexuality was - why would I?

Not many people would, mamy. But some might. Having a medical examination - especially an intimate one - is quite a thing for some people and they often need to make sure that the person prodding them about is acceptable to them in all respects.

Nor should there be any problem if it is his race he dislikes, Andy. A patient should be entitled to object to a doctor on the basis of his race in every bit the same way as if he does not like the shape of his nose. I accept that race is a “protected feature” for many matters but it should not be so for medical examinations. Many see such a procedure as personally invasive albeit a necessary one. But they do not want to extend the privilege of allowing the invasion of their body to someone they do not like. Whether it is acceptable or not some people dislike others on the basis of their race and nothing will alter that.

It is not outrageous that someone would like to be treated by a doctor of their own race. Adoption agencies - especially those overseen by public authorities - make a great play of placing children, as far as posssible, with adoptive parents of the same race as the child. Why? Because race is important and critical in some respects and it should not be off-limits.

On TV Doctors behind doors last night, a female doctor was going to examine a lady's rectum as she had bad piles.

She had a male trainee doctor with her, and when asked if she would be ok him being there, she said 'good god no' :-)

I think I've said a few times today, if you are going for a test or if you need an examination , you can request a doctor of the same sex.


Over my lifetime it hasn't bothered me, but I know it does bother some.

Almost all the gynaecologists I have been treated by have been men, I don't know if any were gay or not - never occurred to me.

Maybe as years go by people are getting more faddy not less.
