/// Just like making gas chamber jokes to Jewish people isn't banter. ///
What a ridiculous analogy, this wasn't openly said to the black soldiers, it was put in a private message between mates.
Obviously you have never been in the services or any such organisation, only ever experienced the closed confines of an office I believe.
Banter goes off on a daily basis be it directed at females, race, religion. or even personal differentials, some of it (as in this case) not acceptable to be aired directly at the persons. //
The armed services are not a race apart with special dispensation to indulge in racist banter, so long as the recipients don't get to hear about it.
The point here is not that the 'banter' was aired publicly, and exposed for the vile Neanderthal racism that it is. The point is that these views are unacceptable, and the notion of sharing them as a 'bit of banter' does not make them acceptable.
it is not possible to be a 'jokey racist'.
