I worked in Saudi Arabia with 140 'Yanks' and just 4 'Brits'.
I was struck by the way they all regarded themselves as 'Americans' with their 'Home State' taking very much a second place. There were 'Yanks' from Washington to Mississippi as well as a lot from Texas (due to Dallas being the headquarters of ARAMCO) but they were all 'Yanks' first and foremost.
I often wonder if Europeans will some day feel the same way.
Great Britain, Team GB were what we called ourselves in the first Olympic Games in 1896.
In the 1920's we lost Ireland and that is when the United Kingdom of Great Braitain and Northern Ireland (UK), first became widely adopted.
But we had been Great Britain in the Olympics for 25 years by then, so their was no desire to rename as UK.
the european union means and stands for nothing...they have not won any medasl...only medal theyve got is the one for being found out for what they are and stand for...
Northern Ireland DOES exist in the Olympics: it's profile is higher than mmnirmal in fact as it gets its name mentioned on medals tables and at medals ceremonies.
As for the table at the link : we've had a question about this already I think. Is it really worth getting steamed up about?
