It's preferable to the alternative - give them evidence that the West really does hate Islam, and get them even more fired up for when they are released.

prisons don't deter people from crime, they just give the public satisfaction that Something Is Being Done. The main deterrent generally is growing up: crime is a young man's game and most criminals just give it up as they acquire families and responsibilities. I suspect this may even prove to be true of hardline Islamists - there seem to be lots of kids running off to join Isis but not many over-30s.
Whatever: don't expect jails to be reformatories, it's never happened.

dannyk13 - //Andy, do you honestly think that these fanatics will trust any prison officers? //
In reality, probably not.
But given the situation that jihadists in jail find themselves - in their eyes they are being imprisoned by the infidel who hates Islam.
I would be less inclined to underline that perception by smacking them around the head with a nightstick which simply inflames their sense of injustice, and more worryingly, gives them plenty to tell impressionable young Muslim men when they come out back into their communities.
That is not say I advocate tea and biscuits in the warden's office, but let's try not to make a volatile situation any worse by underlining prejudices that are already firmly in place.

They are to be put in a separate section of the prison it now seems.

From andy-hughes, //give them evidence that the West really does hate Islam, and get them even more fired up for when they are released……. in their eyes they are being imprisoned by the infidel who hates Islam. //
That is dangerous talk. These aren’t children who are liable to sulk because they think someone doesn’t like them. Their only purpose in life is to pursue the advancement of Islam – and, as is evidenced by the plethora of willing ‘martyrs’, they will pursue that purpose at any cost. They couldn’t give a hoot what the west thinks of them. They are our enemies; they would rejoice in seeing any one of us, or all of us, dead, and whatever we do that isn’t going to change. The same mistake is made repeatedly by the naïvely trusting advocates of blind faith in the triumph of the better side of human nature – that of endowing Islamists with a western mentality that embraces both reason and compassion. Radical Islam embraces neither and there is no compromise – ever – and the sooner we, as a culture, acknowledge that reality the better. In the real world this sort of idealism is not only futile – it is positively self-destructive.
