will this help stop the ones trying to get to the uk, if they go here they will be seeking refugee in France and therefore cannot get to the uk, or will it increase the numbers heading for that area from the south of Europe.

The French are well aware of the intentions of those they are seeking to shelter. If they were just looking at giving them refuge (clue is in the name: refugee) they would not place them near to the Channel.

These people are not refugees – they already have refuge in France (and almost certainly had it elsewhere before they got to France). They are illegal immigrants and should be treated as such.
