I am not for one minute suggesting that Mr al Balkr is as faultless as the day is long, but we do have due process of law, and everyone is innocent until proven guilty under the law.

That is the point I will always make when due process is not followed.

No argument there at all.

Emotionally, I entirely agree with the view that the world is undoubtedly a better place without him - loss of information and intelligence notwithstanding - but I do try and follow the notions of justice and fairness when I am able.

The only scandal is his scumbag lawyer. I hope the German SS look into his political allegiances. If he thinks that he is potentially very dangerous.

As for lost intel, he was detained on Monday so I'm sure the security services have already 'had a chat' (unless you are advocating waterboarding or similar?)

As I said, I do not for one minute suggest that Mr al Balkr is innocent, the evidence overhwmeingly indicates that he is not - but we don't judge and condemn on evidence, we do it through due process, and my regret is that there was not an opportunity for that to be exercised.

As Gromit succinctly indicated - lost intelligence, the absence of due process, and the possibility that Mr al Balkr's death adds credence to his vile cause are all regrets.

Lawyers do not become 'scumbags' because they defend the potentially indefensible - they provide a valuable aspect of the operation of the law. That is doing a job, it does not automatically infer that every defence solicitor believes his or her client innocent, but rigorous testing of the prosecution's case is vital to ensure that justice is served. Without that we simply have a vigilante system of law.
