Bob Dylan.... hmmm, the times the times they are a-changing

Gromit - //Dylan hasn't written anything decent for nearly half a century. His last top 10 single was in 1969. His last top 40 in 1978. // If chart positions are a measure of artistic validity, that makes Mr Blobby more important than Paul Simon, and the Venga Boys more artistically credible than Leonard Cohen - would you suggest that is an accurate measure of...

Andy....this appears on the BBC website this morning :::
"The 75-year-old rock legend received the prize "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".
This is word-for-word what is shown on the Nobel's own website. There is no mention of any books, "just poetic expressions within the great American song tradition"

I don't think you ever know who's under consideration; they don't publish long lists or short lists, and there don't seem to be a lot of leaks as a rule, so most of the winners ae surprises.
And nobody ever has any "right" to be annoyed about it; it's their prize and they can give it to absolutely anyone they please.

I can only conclude then that the committee have decided that Dylan's lyrical genius is sufficient that it informs poetic expression, and therefore as I suggested, crosses previous boundaries between written literature and sung lyrics.
But I am only surmising, I have no idea how the committee reaches its decisions.

divebuddy - //The Nobel Prize isn't what it was, is it. It's becoming a bit like Show Biz...... And the award for lifetime achievement (though nobody is too sure what that achievement is) goes to Bruce Forsyth. Or in this case Bob Dylan.
You just have to live long enough and you'll get one eventually. //
I disagree entirely.
You may take issue with the merits of the recipient, but to compare it with any 'showbiz' award is meaningless.
The Nobel Prize in all its facets represents a genuine accolade for the recipient who can be genuinely proud of their achievements.
You may have to produce a lifetime of work to receive the award, hence the age of most recipients, but they never receive it simply for living one day after the other - we all do that.

divebuddy - //Andy. Are you incapable of letting anything go. Why do you think it necessary to give your opinion on every other opinion. //
Because that is how debate in general, and The Answerbank in particular, works. We exchange views and opinions, sometimes on the facts, sometimes on peoples' opinions of the facts.
//Do you think many people care what you think any more. //
On the basis that I enjoy a healthy exchange of posts with a wide variety of AB'ers on an even wider variety of subjects, I would have to say that yes, they do.
// I now generally try to read threads by ignoring any posts you make - life is just too short to bother with the endless going around in circles. //
You've said this before, several times, but your frequent responses to my posts rather contradicts your position.
If you are not reading my posts, you will have no idea what I am saying, or care less about them - but it's clear that you do read, and you do care.
Feel free to stop at any time - advice I have offered several times previously, and which you continue to ignore - and probably will again today.

I'm not stopping anyone here debating it, naomi; my reference was to those who might have been in the running for the prize and, supposedly, been aggrieved to have been beaten to it by a mere folk singer. Personally, I have no problem at all with Dylan winning it but I'm interested to hear how others feel.
