This was never going to be a winnable seat for Labour. Its been held by high-profile Tories for many years (Hurd, Cameron) But to lose such a big majority can't easily be explained, even though the area voted to Remain in June.

But all just dues must go to the LibDems....coming second, with a huge 23.5% rise in their vote....well done !

//how is this a bad result for Labour ?//

They lost ground. Hardly a good result.
These days Labour supporters think if anybody at all turns up and votes for them it's a good result.
So it appears.
Comparing actual numbers of votes on a vastly different turnout is largely pointless. Labour's vote percentage wise was pretty much unchanged.

There's now't so queer as folk and the 11,611 good people of Witney who voted LibDem must rank among the queerest I've heard of recently.
You probably didn't need to be a political analyst to predict that the lib Dems would do rather well here. Nor to hazard that they will continue to pick up opposition votes given the state of Labour and UKIP
We haven't become a one party state JUST yet
