This is good news but I am wondering why its taken years of us all going through hell, before something has been done ?

I don't know what its like Down Under but its bloody endemic here in Britain.

We are being hounded from pillar to post, 24 hours a day. Its not rocket science to work out what is going on.

The difficulty is the industry runs the game here. It relies on self-regulation and self-policing, and we all know how well that works !

The whole business is runs by shysters !

In addition to the fine Mikey, they should have stated if another company is caught doing this practice the chairman gets 3 months, that would make them think twice.

TWR...I agree....a good long jail sentence would help to concentrate the mind!
It is a pain yes, but I wouldn't say it's put me through hell !
another toothless sanction - these companies will merely switch their operations out of the UK, where the law can't touch them.
But a lot of the Elderly are herIam.
Good news, but I think “going through hell” is a bit of an overstatement, Mikey!

I find playing these people at their own game is the best thing to do:

Telling them you need to ask Jesus, who lives in the shed at the bottom of the garden with Elvis usually gets rid of them, or when they ask if you are with your computer, ask them if a computer is the thing that goes round and round and your clothes come out lovely and clean!

Failing that, hanging up tends to stop the call in it’s tracks.
The problem is that many operate from abroad where they can”t be regulated. From a practical point, I have got caller iD and don’t pick the phone up unless I know who it is. I do get spates of caller Id withheld numbers which i just ignore.

hereIam....I meet OAPs a great deal in the course of my work, and these continual nuisance calls are very distressing indeed to them.

They are a modern plague and should have been dealt with a long time ago.
The companies involved completely ignore the TPS, as the scheme is a toothless tiger.

Bigbad....I know every trick in the book, when it comes to dealing with these calls, but enjoyable as some of them are, it won't stop the callers making further calls to the next person on the list.

Companies that employ this kind of business model, have a huge turn-over in staff. We can make the caller feel that so bad that they resign, but their desk and monitor is soon taken by somebody else.
mikey you said 'us all' and I pointed out that it didn't put me through hell ! Of course I feel sorry for the elderly who can't cope, but you didn't say that.
Question Author
hereIam...perhaps I used the royal "us all" inadvisably, but my point remains....these calls are a plague and very irritating and distressing to many people.
I Know !

I am so glad that we got that settled !

I now use the answer phone to filter out all i/c calls on my house phone, and
I have advised lots of other people to do the same. The difficulty with some OAPs is that they rely on their phone to keep in touch with family and friends, far more than younger people. They seem to think that they should answer every call, "just in case"
I don’t doubt you are right, Mikey.
But these people will find ways around it.
I do sometimes wonder how people are so easily taken in, but whilst they are, these companies will continue to trade.

The employees who make the calls are just as accountable. They must KNOW they are scamming people.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I doubt the threat of a fine will work.
I just hang up, they have never bothered me and I've told my elderly Mum to do the same and she does - but we don't get that many anyway.

So glad we got it settled too mikey !!
