Zac Goldsmith has resigned as an MP.
A by-election will now take place in his Richmond Park constituency.

There is considerable opposition to the expansion in the constituency.
If Goldsmith stands as an Independent, he will probably win, which is why the Conservatives are considering not fielding a candidate.
If they do or don't field a candidate, it could split the electorate and let the LibDems in.

The people of Richmond will be well shot of Mr Goldsmith.
He was a highly lacklustre candidate for the London Mayor’s post (and would not have though twice of deserting his Richmond constituents had he won). But in any case in London, the advantages Mr Khan had of being both a Labour candidate and a Muslim would have seen him home against any opposition. It is highly unlikely there will ever be a white English mayor of London again.
I don’t believe Mr Goldsmith will stand as an independent candidate. I don’t think he has the stomach for it (though stranger things hgave happened). If the people of Richmond elect a LibDem candidate as their MP they must have caught the same infection that afflicted the voters in Witney a week or two ago. They should see their GP immediately (if they can get an appointment before the by-election).

Time will tell, Gromit. However, the population of London is extremely diverse and in many boroughs white English people are considerably in the minority. Furthermore, inner London is notoriously prone to vote Labour and notoriously prone to support Labour candidates from ethnic minorities when they stand. The Labour Party has a whole host of MPs from ethnic minority backgrounds who will jump at the chance of having eight years in charge of London. I'm sure the Labour Party will have addressed its current problems by 2024 and many of their candidates will be lining up to take the reins at City Hall.

NJ...I am not sure where you are headed with this ?
You use the words " notoriously prone"
Surely people are able to vote whatever way they like. You may not like the way that a Labour candidate won the Election for Mayor, but I can't recall you, or anyone else use the words "notoriously prone" when Boris won previously. He won on that occasion fair and square, just as Khan did this time around.
But I am still unsure about why you seem to think that a non-white Mayor is a bad thing ?
I usually appreciate all your posts and even sometimes agree with them, but on this occasion you are edging towards the unacceptable. With respect !

We’re straying way off track and that’s my fault. But:
“And even if its true....what difference does it make what colour skin any new London Mayor will have in the future ?”
On reflection I accept that “notoriously prone” was perhaps the wrong way to describe voters’ habits but “prone” will do. Inner London voters are prone to vote Labour (in the main), outer London voters are prone to vote Tory (in the main).
I didn’t say the colour of Mr Khan’s skin made any difference, Mikey. Nor did I say it was a bad thing. I only mentioned Mr Khan because we were talking about Mr Goldsmith’s mayoral candidacy when Mr Khan was his principle opponent. In my view any Labour Muslim candidate would have trounced Mr Goldsmith. A non-Muslim Labour candidate may not have fared quite so well but would probably still have succeeded nonetheless. Mr Goldsmith ran a highly mediocre campaign which seemed to centre almost entirely on the airport issue. All very interesting for those affected but hardly designed to get the other 95% of London’s electorate flocking to the polls to put their crosses by Mr Goldsmith’s name.
It’s not the colour of Mr Khan’s skin that concerns me. It is his religion. I have made no secret of the fact that I believe that Islam has no place in Western Europe and in particular no place in the UK (which, in reality, is the only place I am concerned with). London now has a Muslim mayor and this in large part is due to the fact that there are huge numbers of Muslims in London. Muslims, when given the opportunity, will predominantly vote for a Muslim candidate. It is fortuitous that mushroom has mentioned the Lutfur Rahman affair. I was not going to raise it but since it has been cited, if you read the full judgement handed down by the Election Court on that matter (which I have) you will understand why I believe this is so. The Islamification of large parts of London means that the Islamic vote has a considerable influence on the outcome of elections there and this influence will only grow. The recent mayoral election was a case in point and without the Muslim votes (many of which he probably gained by virtue of the fact that he is a Muslim and little else) his success may not have been so assured.
I’m sorry you may find all this unacceptable but I find the Muslim influence in the UK and in particular in parts of London equally so.
I won’t reply any further on this as think I have hijacked Gromit’s question far too much already.
