I am not sure that the Monks are in way to blame here. These stupid people who get drunk on their wine could just as easily get drunk on anything else that they can find in the supermarket.

I bought a few bottles of wine and liqueurs in Lidl, as Xmas presents, and they all contained the same level of alcohol.

This is a non-story if ever I saw one.
So Scottish plod fail miserably at their job and look to blame a drink.

right-ho.
Lol I can remember the time I took a bottle home to my da! He laughed at me and said I grew up on that. He is from near Buckfast and they used to have the 'tonic' whenever they were ill!!

Anyway we tried it and yuck!!!!!
as a Scot..have never seen it for sale anywhere other than boxed in COSTCO and have seen no evidence of it on the streets..think it may be a Wegie thing..not Edinburgh....and most likely not peculiar to Scotland either !
Question Author
no, allegedly in Edinburgh the taste is not for Buckie, they choose something else - and those who partake are rather serious about their habit....

Heroin Habit is not peculiar to Edinburgh and that was a film..not real !!
I think YMB has made a very good comment here. If parts of Scotland have a problem with antisocial behaviour, then perhaps the local Police need to be looked at.
Mikey every part of the UK has areas with public disorder..not just Scotland !!
I thought it was NI that were big drinkers of this foul stuff!
my understanding too Islay !!
Minty....yes, you are right, but I wonder why Scotland seems to have developed such a love for this tonic wine ?

I can't recall seeing it on sale anywhere in South Wales, and we have our share of stupid "neds" here as well !
Well they certainly used to be Murray!!
what does it taste of ???
I have looked on the wiki page for Buckfast, and I can't see what its made from, let alone taste of. The last time I drove past Buckfast Abbey, I can't recall seeing any vast acres laid out to grapes.
mikey4444 , Somebody goes out at night, gets blind drunk, starts a fight or indulges in other antisocial behaviour, please explain how that is the fault of the police? or does "looking at the police" mean something else in wales.
Vulcan....no it means the same as it does anywhere. But if the Scottish Police have a problem caused by drunkenness, than they ought to be doing something about it
It tastes like really cheap port
Mikey, //The last time I drove past Buckfast Abbey, I can't recall seeing any vast acres laid out to grapes. //

The monks are bee-keepers. I think the drink is honey-based.

This doesn't appear to be a new problem to Scotland.
i keep getting this image of a load of monks having an almighty dust up in the cloister

It's not the only drink with a poor reputation!
Stella = Old wife beater
Special Brew = Tramp Juice
