Dates For Mikey's Diary
6 Answers
A couple of dates for your diary, Mikey, which I have just read in this month’s “Railway Magazine”.
The “new build” class A1 steam locomotive No 60163 “Tornado” will be visiting Cardiff and Penzance in the New Year. It will be running from Paddington to Cardiff on March 1st. If you are visiting your country estate in May, it will be running from Paddington to Penzance on May 29th.
Exact timings are not yet available but the St David’s Day trip is due to arrive in Cardiff at around 1:00pm and will head back to London around 4:30pm. The Penzance train leaves Paddington at 8:15am and I should think it will take the thick end of seven hours to get to the Far West (the quickest journey by scheduled “125” takes over five hours) so you’re looking at a mid-afternoon arrival. “Tornado” is not taking the train back to London (it imagine it will need a rest after the 326 mile trip!) . That is being done by 1970’s diesel-hydraulic loco “Western Champion”.

Nice looking engine Judge. It appears to have had at least 4 livery changes over the years. I wonder which one it is wearing now.

Yes, Togo, the A1s appeared in four different liveries when they were running in regular service. The “A1 Locomotive Trust” (which built the engine from scratch) promised Tornado would carry all four of the livery variations during its first period of operation.
Following its initial debut in ‘works grey’, the first proper livery carried by Tornado was apple green. This was changed to BR green (a darker shade) in early 2011 when the locomotive returned to service following remedial attention to the boiler in Germany. The change to express passenger blue was undertaken at a works in Southall during Tornado’s October-November 2012 winter maintenance.
That livery remained for only around 18 months. The Tornado ‘brand’ is very much as an apple green locomotive and this will remain her ‘core’ livery”. Apart from the various colours there were also variations in emblems and lettering on both the locomotives and their tenders and these have also been displayed at various times by Tornado.
