Maybe they are a bit anachronistic but in a briefing paper I read a number of years ago ( some colleagues and I wanted to nominate a very good officer for a gong he got it eventually) It comes down to awards for people who have made or continue to make a difference to the country in general.
Now none of us can say that we did not enjoy the euphoria of the olympics therefore those tghat created that should be honoured. Charities and those who contribute to make peoples lives better should be honoured as well.
Where it falls flat is the cronyism, the back scratching to reward someone who has "helped you on your way" Michael Dobbs' Francis Urquhart did it most magnificently, unfortunately successive politicians have followed that game plan.
Is the honours systen still valid in the 21st century, Yes most definately but I suggest it need a look at to get rid of the crony rewards
