\\But now students at a University of London college are demanding that such seminal figures as Plato, Descartes, Immanuel Kant and Bertrand Russell should be largely dropped from the curriculum simply because they are white.//

From the Uni website: "At SOAS you can study a wider range of religious and philosophica l traditions in more depth than any other programme in the field, anywhere in the world." Best edit that then.

And here are the ancient Eastern philosophy schools:
Confucianism
Taoism
Chinese Naturalism
Mohism
Legalism
Yangism
The Logicians
The Agrarians
School of Diplomacy
School of Military
Under Confucianism alone, you have:
Confucius, arguably the most influential Chinese philosopher ever.
Dong Zhongshu, integrated Yin Yang cosmology into a Confucian ethical framework.
Gaozi
Mencius, idealist who proposed mankind is innately benevolent.
Wang Fu, endorsed the Confucian model of government.
Wang Mang, emperor who sought to create a harmonious society, yet chaos resulted.
Xunzi, broke from Mencius' view, instead arguing that morality is extrinsic.
Yan Hui
Zengzi
Zheng Xuan
Zisi
Zhu Xi
And not to forget:
Xuanxue
Zen
Neo-Confucianism
Islamic-Confucianism

I can't agree that anyone is 'trying to re-write history'.
If the SOAS board agree that their university alone aligns its philosophy studies to the philosophers of a certain racial background, in keeping with its remit, then that's not a problem.
It's not as if they are demanding that every other educational establishment follows their lead - they are entitled to offer the education to their students that they see fit.
I don't see what in that demand renders anyone a 'leftie snowflake' - and would appreciate an explanation of that term please webbo3.

I think they only recognize one philosopher in Zim, togo - can we guess who it might be?
The only white man you can trust is a dead white man.
We have this American president, Obama, born of an African father, who is saying we will not give you aid if you don't embrace homosexuality. We ask, was he born out of homosexuality? We need continuity in our race, and that comes from the woman, and no to homosexuality.
I've just concluded - since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people, and enjoys an attractive countenance - thus if it becomes necessary, I shall travel to Washington, D.C., get down on my knee, and ask his hand.

No-one, including President Obama is trying to suggest that homosexuality is a suitable replacement for heterosexuality.
Perhaps you are not aware - it's not compulsory.

// Or Africa, for African philosophers? Zimbabwe say.//
there isnt a uni in Zim they can study at is there ?
There was ( univ college Salisbury but I may be wrong) but there isnt now
The idea I think is that at SOAS oriental and african studies that one should only study oriental and african philosophers without doing the white ones
so that a university becomes a one-sided versity
would you ask medical students what they want to study ?
or engineers ?
or pharmacists ? I dont want to study drugs that make you go boom diddy boom diddy .......

I assumed it was a 70s term used to describe white people (either Love Thy Neighbour or by Charlie Williams) but it seems to be used to represent those who take offence easily

\\because they are white.//
imagine if oxford or Cambridge or any British uni said \ we are no longer going to study Martin Luther King, Mary Seacole, Nelson Mandela because they are black, imagine what would happen.
If they are not happy with the syllabus its simple, study somewhere else.

Peter Pedant - // // Togo - I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about //
o god another Aber who hasnt even bothered to read the post before slagging it off /
I am long in the habit of saying exactly what I mean, so when I say I have no idea what a poster is talking about, I mean, I have no idea what he is talking about.
If I was taking issue with what he said, or 'slagging it off' as you so delicately put it, then I would have said so, but since I don't understand the point, I would not be in a position to take issue with it.
I suggest it is you who needs to read what is written before weighing in with your own personal misinterpretations of what you read.

I did read that post - but that doesn't explain what the term means, it simply gives FF's interpretation of it.

\\Webbo - I really do think that this is The Mail making something out of nothing on a slow news day - this notion is never going to fly, students' 'demands' are as old as university education itself, and are given a positive response about as often as Haley's comet passes the earth!//
Another best answer if i could give it.

FF didn't give his interpretation of a snowflake he gave a link explaining 'snowflake'
being more prone to taking offence and less resilient than previous generations, or too emotionally vulnerable to cope with views that challenge their own.
