It`s a case of simple economics - more people taking out of the system than putting in. Be that people living longer, girls having kids at a young age without contributing to the tax system and some immigrants. In my experience (and I live in a fairly multi cultural area) most immigrants come here to better themselves and make a better life for their families, so hence they work. Some of them do tend to bring granny and grandad over as well which costs. I don`t really know what qualifies Katie Hopkins to have so much knowledge about this. As a North Devon girl, she has hardly been party to immigration problems being that there are hardly any immigrants there (they tend to go where the work is and there is precious little of that in ND) and she seems to have failed for one reason or another at whatever she does. I guess she is now making a living via her gob. Still, each to their own and one can choose whether or not to read what she has to say (I tend to choose not to)
Does anyone have any figures? What percentage of the extra demand on the NHS is down to migrants, and what is down to the likes of me getting older, newer technologies etc?
237SJ....you have mentioned a very important point,

Its that we are all living longer that is a major cause of the back-log. It stands to reason that as we all get older, we will be using more of the various aspects of the health care system.

All four of my grandparents died before the age of 70. Both my parents died
when they reached 71. My generation will almost certainly live longer, but not necessarily healthier, thus putting more strain of the system.
OMG we're all living longer, so THAT's the problem, silly me and I thought it was all the immigrants flooding into the country ... !
Mikey, thousands of immigrants working in the NHS isn't a patch on the millions of immigrants that are here and able to get to see a doctor, a visit to A&E or a hospital bed, the figures just do not add up. I am not against immigration, just the open borders, uncontrolled mass influx of people still trying to get here!
My family has paid over £1,250,000 in tax in the last five years. I cannot even get an answer from the doctors for an appointment, just a recording saying to self medicate. That is NOT right.
My dad can't get an op to repair a hernia because there isn't enough money available in the NHS. I do not believe immigration is the problem.
It's down to mismanagement, lack of social care and the fact we're all living longer and suffering from illnesses like dementia and cancers.
^ absolutely. I know someone who had a course of a new immunotherapy drug which cost £135,000. It didn`t work and even if it had, it was only buying him time being that he was stage 4. There are massive costs involved and it is very naive to blame the problems on immigrants

Of course it is going to cause problems. It already has. Nobody is disputing that but I don`t know what the UK can do about that. When you go to other countries (eg US) you see a variety of ambulances on the streets. They all have the name of the private hospital on the side. If you haven`t got the money to go to that private hospital then you are stuffed. Thank goodness that doesn`t happen here. The staff of the NHS do a fantastic job with the resources that they have but times and our culture have changed. I would happily take a reduction on my taxes and provide for my own private health care if I could. I can afford to pay for private health care when I would still have to pay into the NHS and subsidise other people.
Must make it clear that I am not putting all the blame on uncontrolled immigration. As has been pointed out, there are many other factors in play.

BUT....average longevity is reasonably easy to forecast and changes take place over a long period. Changes in treatment take place over lengthy periods. (Doctors have not only just begun to do knee and hip replacements, for example. The demand for those treatments has gone up but the length of time needed to accomplish them has reduced dramatically). However, the recent influx of migrants to the UK is unprecedented in both its scale and rapidity. Nobody forecast it; nobody planned for it. Every year since 2002 more than half a million people have arrived to settle in the UK. That's more than seven million people. True, some of them may have returned or moved elsewhere. But it's still an unmanageable number. No country can expect its public services to cope with such a huge influx without serious adverse effects on its infrastructure and vital services. If anyone can explain to me how such huge numbers are not a large contributory factor to the problem we are discussing, I'd be interested.
Katie Hopkins is sickening she really is a privileged cow who had never ever had to struggle. Bet she didn't have to wait in a queue for her recent brain transplant or whatever she had...Bet if her child came down with a fever she would have to sit five hours in A & E to see a doctor. The NHS is mis-managed, they pay locums three times the normal hourly rate instead of employing full time staff. They follow ridiculous NICE guidelines on treatment that end up costing the NHS millions of pounds. The only thing I agree with her is that it should not be free at point of use. If people had to pay for treatment at A&E then apply for reimbursement like they do in quite a few countries people would not be going with flu or a broken finger nail. If you had to pay up front for Ambulance service -like you have to in Canada and France, then drunks would not be taxied to A& E. There are so many management problems in the NHS its too easy to blame 'scroungers' and immigrants. Sack all the Management and get some new blood in, and go back to nursing Apprenticeships where kids can go in at 18 and learn to be nurses, not have to go to Uni and get degrees.

Unless you live on a deserted island, I dont believe that for 1 minute!

"Average longevity is reasonably easy to forecast" I don`t agree. Both of my Grandmothers lived to within a few years of a century. Both of my parents lived to a good age but nowhere near 95/97. We are always reading about how my generation are going to outlive our grandparents but I really don`t think we will. I am sure I will not get to my grandmothers' age or even my Mum's age (84) because I, along with a lot of other modern women, have completely different lifestyles with their associated risk factors. I think my generation will cost the NHS less money than the generation that came before me.

Have a little think about that answer, trt.
Rockyroad "She really is a privilged cow" How do you know that? Her Dad was an electrician in Barnstaple and she went to the local convent school. Hardly privileged.
BTW - the school that she went to was the one my Mum used to threaten to send me to when I had been naughty.
Mikey, get real. There's 100s of thousands of poles in this country who drink to excess and consequently the Hepatologists and Hepatobiliary Surgeons are appealing for more funding to deal with the inevitable health consequences.... the number of Polish Patients far outweighs the number of Polish health care workers, the majority of whom are minimum wage workers with poor English who send their earnings back to Poland. I can't think of a single Polish Doctor or nurse I know at my hospital.

Please wake up and smell the coffee.

Immigration has brought our public services to its knees...
shes privileged now. Do you really think she cares about the NHS? Its just a platform for her to make another few bob berating immigrants and poor people who (apparently) "buy stuff from Primark" instead of looking after their family. In fact, she's nuts!
