The UK now accepts that Assad can stay on in Syria.

// The UK accepts that Bashar al-Assad should be allowed to run for re-election in the event of a peace settlement in Syria, Boris Johnson has said, in a dramatic reversal of the British policy stretching back to the early days of the civil war that the president must go. //

it would be funny if hundreds of thousands hadn't been killed while we pratted about for the last 6 years.

who's "we" - we've had very little involvement as far as I can tell.
"The UK accepts that Bashar al-Assad should be allowed to run for re-election..."

How very kind.
//The UK now accepts that Assad can stay on in Syria.// How very patronising of them. I have said continuously for the last few years on here and elsewhere, that the UK and the Obama-led USA, should work with Russia to rid anyone trying to overthrow Assad- the legitimate ruler, whatever you think of him - and countless lives would have been saved and Europe would not have been overrun by immigrants.
Why do you not listen to me ? :0)
I predicted Brexit and Trump, and for the record, I now predict Le Pen and the demise of Merkel this year.
signed, "Nostradamus" Khandro.
I also predicted those khando ....and the last General election!
A prophet is without honour in his own country, Khandro. :)
well done Nostrakhan
Well done Russia !

Shame that Cameron's gone?
Don't think so. At least we now have a PM with two more balls than he had.
How anyone can even think of allowing Assad to stand in democratic free elections, when he is a war criminal is beyond me.
And your alternative is what Mikey?
Arrest Assad and take him to the Hague, in the same way as happened to Milosevic and others like him.

He can't be rewarded for his war criminal activities Danny.

Mikey,
Assad was the democratically elected leader, and Syria was invaded by foreign Jihadists, who fought dirty with chemical weapons and mass murder of civilians. The civil war was not pretty on either side. War crimes were everywhere committed by both sides, but you seem unwilling to admit that.

Gromit....no where have I suggested that it wasn't a dirty war. Assad used chemical weapons on his own people and attacked known civilian and Hospital targets. He should dragged to the Hague ASAP.
“Arrest Assad and take him to the Hague,…”

For trial, presumably. But why bother? He’s already been convicted:

“How anyone can even think of allowing Assad to stand in democratic free elections, when he is a war criminal is beyond me.”

Best just have him arrested and shot. Cut out the middleman.

"...and Syria was invaded by foreign Jihadists, who fought dirty with chemical weapons and mass murder of civilians."

Whom the UK was willing to support at one time. Only the good sense (for once) of the Commons prevented it. Mrs May has the right idea which she announced today: we should (and hopefully will, for a while at least) keep out of matters that don't concern us and which we don't properly understand (either through accident or design).
NJ....Its a good job that attitude wasn't around when it was kicking off in the Balkans in the 1990's.
Mikey, where is the authority for the UK to arrest Asad?
Where did the authority come from to send troops into the Balkans ?
The UN if I remember rightly.
