Naomi, I remember some recent posts about a pregnant woman costing the NHS £500K and I worked out and didn't believe her stay was costing £8,000 a day. You pisted that £8K was about right. I cannot find that thread, but is it the same case?

Not surprising though, because it seems to happen on a regular basis.

My sympathy for the UK is at best "luke warm." as over the years on AB when discussing alternative methods of health care (particularly that of the U.S) one has been reminded time and time again that the UK is an understanding, philanthropic society who would attend to the health of the needy from whatever part of the world.
Well, that is what is happening and appreciated by all, so please stop moaning about "tourism healthcare."
Unless of course you are now realising that it is expensive to be a caring society, but you want to retain the title whilst cutting back on the expense?
Just make up your minds.

/// Apologies for hijacking your thread. ///
Apology accepted Gromit, but there is nothing really to apologise for, you were not high jacking my thread in the true sense of the word.
/// While I agree that this is frustrating, if a passenger on a plane goes into labour 3 months early, there isn't really an option to not let them into the country. The alternative would be to let all 5 die. ///
America refused her permission to enter their country, why did she then not just turn around and fly back to Nigeria?
Well we all know the answer for that don't we?

Please don't speak for all of us, as it in no way appreciated by us all.
Especially those who are being treated in hospital corridors or keep having their operations set back time and time again.

AOG...you make a good point which i accept fully.
However, the impression that one gets based on ABers and the media in general over the years, that the UK "as a whole" abhors the treatment of the sick which indicates, to me, that such reticent attitude to "invading invalids" would not be tolerated by the UK populace.
However....your point is noted.

Read through the whole article we are being ripped off, and 'OUR' NHS is suffering as a consequence.
I think this reader's view should be awarded BA.

Sqad //It was interesting that her original destination was the U.S and not the UK, so one must assume that she was willing to pay for her healthcare.......//
That may well have been the case but although she had a visa she did not have the required documentation to confirm that she had the funds to pay an invoice.
Regarding the circumstances of where she was, she went into labour 3 months early and so finding herself in the UK was a fluke.

/// She had intended to give birth to the babies in Chicago, in the US, where she has family – but was turned away by border officials upon arrival. ///
Then perhaps her family should cough up, after all that is what they would have been forced to do if the US had let her in?

Easy to say when you are not footing the bill, if you can't afford them then don't have them especially by IVF, surely there are enough kids waiting for a home in Africa?

Ah, such a shame, never mind mate your missus will soon be home, that is unless she claims citizenship in the good old UK, then that will be a double whammy, you will be able to join them, then you can all live off us 'rent free'.
/// She was told by her doctor to fly to the US to have her babies, as Nigerian hospitals do not have the ‘facilities to cater for the
children’. ///
Sound advice indeed especially if one can get away with it.
