I saw this on CH4 News last night and it was horrific. Its a case of the Media, this time CH4, bringing it to our attention.
CH4 and the BBC get a lot of stick on here but thank God they are prepared to stick their necks out with investigations like this.
The Church of England wee left floundering as usual !

I entirely agree that some of the subtleties you and I love to bring to our conversation are sometimes misdirected, or indeed lost in translation when communicated by the written word.
One of the factors that steered me off course was your reference to me as a persecuted Christian - persecuted sometimes, as any regulars know, but I am not a Christian, something which I should not have expected you to know as a newer AB'er.
But thanks for your kind support - always appreciated!!

This is abuse by a religion that purports to be superior to others. And it was first covered up by the CofE many years ago. And to say that I somehow disapprove of sexual abuse by one religion, while condoning it in others is highly offensive.
But now that some have tried to divert this debate to the Usual Factors, can I attempt to bring it back into line.
This is hardly the first time that the CofE has been seen to be lacking in the area of sexual abuse. Here in Wales, we had a series of scandals involving Bishops of the CinW, another Anglican church, and similar things have happened in Scotland and NI.
I completely deplore the cover up by the Church, and especially by the rabbit-caught-in-the-headlghts attitude of the present Archbishop Justin Welby......the man that denied that he knew anything was going on when he attended the same camps earlier in his life. In the program last night, evidence was given that some young men were beaten so severely, that they had to wear adult nappies, to cope with the bleeding from the open sores. What did everybody think that was all about then, including Welby.....that these men had incontinence problems ?
There is due to be part two of this investigation aired tonight on CH4 by Cathy Newman, this time showing how this pervert continued his disgusting crimes, when he was in South Africa, a country that he fled to when advised by the Church to "leave the country"
I would hope that Smythe, and others are being interviewed by the Police today. Perhaps they should consider hauling Welby in for questioning as well.

Jack....that is never going to happen. Religions need to recruit new members to replace the older ones, rather in the way that tobacco companies need to recruit children to replace the adults that they killing with their products
But this affair has only come out because CH4 started the investigation. And why is Smyth able to make his way, back and forth between South Africa and Britain quite so freely !

Well, I'll reluctantly step into the fray, if only to say that I simply can't answer for old allegations. This does all sound horrific, I agree, and quite outside my own experience. It certainly needs investigating and I would think that 99.99% of Anglicans agree with that.
If it is any help at all to place this incident historically, I can vouch for the existence of the new 'Safeguarding' document which has been sent to every parish and must be read and signed by all members of the P.C.C.. It is a thick document and took me several hours to peruse and absorb. It is very thorough and was behind the silencing of York bells this Christmas.
In our case the issue of the document is being followed up by a 'Visitation' in (I think) March to check that everyone is aware of the contents, I am told that this is happening everywhere. I have been CRB checked, because of my school connections, but other members in any sort of authority are also being checked.

Here is a quote from the above CH4 link, from Welby :::
"He said he was first informed of allegations in 2013 after the Bishop of Ely had been contacted by an alleged victim, and ensured the police had been “contacted immediately”.
So why did CH4 have to investigate this affair 6 years after 2013, and why is Smythe not now in custody ?
It would seem to me that its not just the CofE that needs to be investigated.

What a very strange analogy to make, I was totally unaware that tobacco companies go around recruiting young wannabe smokers.
LOL.

AOG - //It is unfair to blame Christianity, these assaults were not carried out in the name of the Christian Church, but by a mentally deranged religious fanatic. //
Absolutely - so can we look forward to a similarly understanding perspective when crimes are carried out my Muslim fanatics - and your willingness to distance them from their faith as a whole?
That would indeed be a new chapter.

A man that was entrusted by the CofE to look after the well-being of vulnerable young men, on behalf of the Church.
The CRB check has been mentioned in this thread. This check only finds out if there have been any previous convictions. As Smyth was careful not to get convicted, he was able to continue his abuse for many years.
In incidences like this, the CRB check is about as much use a chocolate teapot.

I'm willing to bet it is not as thick as the average Christian bible, and that it does not receive 0.1% of the attention that a bible receives by people who go on to abuse people for their own perverse pleasure.
Reading a document - or indeed a book - is not the same as taking in what it tells you, and acting on it.
