As Karl suggests above, there are lots of small countries...many without the resources Scotland has...that manage to exist successfully as independent nations.
And, by 'resources', I do not simply refer to oil. The whole world knows that oil is a volatile product in more ways than one; it can go up and down in price and often does. However, the world happily beats a path to our door to get whisky, for example, and tourism is a major business, to name only two income sources.
How much oil does Malta have or Slovenia or the Czech Republic, just to mention other happily independent small states in the EU, never mind the world?

Hear hear Jack, like a sulky teenager threatening to leave home unless it gets its own way. In the end you always have to kick em out. Time to do just that. Then join the States in a fracking revolution until oil is 15 dollars a barrel and get the Welsh and English whisky distilleries going. Re site the nuclear fleet and all the jobs and feed of business in Milford Haven or Portsmouth and sell the nuclear waste to the Chinese or North Koreans or the Taliban.

Perhaps because they have the sense to see that all 4 countries joined in a union is stronger than all split up and unable to exert the same influence. That it is simply common sense for an island, or group of islands, to have the one overall governing parliament. That such a split, should it ever happen, would be as traumatic an event as can be compared to a divorce from marriage, but with a greater economic effect. The UK is small enough to be it's own master without feeling it is simply being dictated to by outside powers. It is a good sized unit, small enough to be inclusive, large enough to to heard, with the various parts not having that dissimilar a culture having been a single nation for a long time now. It is simply the wreckers that ferment discordance and unrest to achieve their aims in order to satisfy their own personal ideology and massive ego.

Absolutely spot on. But the difficulty the Scots face is that should they abandon their membership of the UK, their membership of the EU is by no means guaranteed. In fact it is almost certainly to be rejected. Ms Sturgeon seems to believe she can negotiate some sort of “associate membership” of the EU. Scots believing her are naïve in the extreme.

Not a lot. GDP per capita Malta = $22,700; Slovenia = $15,900; Czech Republic = $17,500. GDP per capita UK = $43,900 (much of which is transferred by various funding formulae from England to Scotland). As some have said above, I think Scotland is well capable of managing as a small country outside the UK and the EU but I think they are underestimating the problems ahead. There are huge challenges to replace all the infrastructure that they have been used to in the UK. Nations like NZ for example have been used to running for a couple of centuries. Scotland leaving would be like a teenager leaving their parents home and then discovering thing like Bills, rent, security etc. I'm not desperate for them to stay, quite the opposite but, being objective, it's all so unnecessary, to sate the ambitions of a leader who thinks she's Mel Gibson. I know the Scots are smarter than that.

The SNP was founded in 1934 and Nicola Sturgeon was born in 1970, so there is no sensible justification for the acrimonious comments on her leadership – and personality – specifically. The only mystery is why her most vociferous critics are often from the same ‘team’ as the one that venerates Thatcher, of all people!

Murraymints, you keep making the same errors as regards the income from oil, whisky etc, imagining - as you clearly do - that because foreign companies are involved the nation gets very little from it. Where on earth do you imagine the UK has been getting major income from, if not from these foreign companies for the past half century?
If Scotland were independent, revenues from these sources would go directly into Scotland's Treasury. The rest of the UK would get NO income from oil in the North Atlantic or the “far” North Sea…the only sea areas with real future promise…or from any Scottish whisky distillery.
