the accused previously told the court that jailing him would lose him a cricketing contract with a county side; this proved to be false:-

maybe I'm missing the point, but isn't the cricketing angle irrelevant? if you beat your wife, shouldn't you forfeit any right you believe you've got to protect your lifestyle? or is this yet another case where sport and its proponents are seen to be above the law?
