Badly handled all round. As stated //So what went wrong here? It appears to have been a series of errors. Shocking behaviour by the airline, and not exactly appropriate behaviour by the passenger. Don’t they normally offer compensation to anyone who will stand down? I was offered a reasonable sum from BA about twenty years ago when a flight from Heathrow to Madrid was overbooked. I couldn’t take is as I would have missed the meeting I was attending had I taken the next flight, but as I recall the sum was sufficient that I would have accepted otherwise.

that's probably what it would have amounted to Garaman: he had to be somewhere, so he couldn't take the offer; but it's very possible other passengers might have volunteered if the money offered had been enough (though I gather it was quite substantial). But they should have sorted it out before anyone even got on the flight.
